Young People's Mental Health
The National Suicide Research Foundation, in October 2004, reported on a study they conducted of mental health issues and strategies for coping with difficulties. The study involved nearly 4,000 adolescents aged 14 –17 in the Health Service Executive Southern Area. The study highlighted the existence of “a hidden population of adolescents with serious mental health problems who do not come to the attention of health care services”
To reach this ‘hidden population’, young people must be consulted and involved in planning and development of health promotion programmes.

A Healthy Mind in An Healthy Body-
The Relationship Between Mind & Body
Dr. Ann Horgan
A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body.
Stress affects the mental and physical health of individuals differently, as do their physical and mental health affect their ability to cope with stress. An unhealthy lifestyle will damage physical and mental health and decrease one’s ability to cope. A healthy lifestyle will encompass proper diet, exercise and learning to communicate and share burdens with others as well as avoiding reliance on smoking, alcohol and other drugs. Overall, mental and physical health are two sides of the one coin and cannot be separated.

Directory of Services and Supports for Young People
Early in 2003, the Kerry Mental Health Association (KMHA) conducted a study of 992 first-year students in 13 Kerry schools. The purpose of the study was to determine, first, how stressed students were and, secondly, how students coped with stress. The results were very interesting (see Research Section).

Mental
Health Act - Consumer Viewpoint By
Diarmuid Ring With the background
of the newly established Mental Health Commission and the new Mental
Health Advocacy movements, I tried in this article to make sense of
the Mental Health Act (2001) in relation mainly to independent peer
advocacy and how these challenge the traditional hierarchal relationships
between professionals and service -users. It remains to be seen how
progressive relationships can inclusively develop so that when the
Act comes up for review in 2005 significant omissions will be altered
and we move towards a system of equals and choice.

Mental
Health and Employment By
Diarmuid Ring In this article I attempted
to understand the barriers facing persons with mental health difficulties
in attaining employment. From a personal point of view I outlined
my own rehabilitation and skills - training which enabled me to seek
employment without any denial of my disability. Because this issue
of employment and mental health is so crucial to independent living
and quality of life, I endeavoured to research the current legislation
regarding equality and discrimination, hoping to engender further
debate and discussion.
